Mandatory Moment of Nostalgia from a Graduating Senior: Part I

While I am eager and ready to move forward and leave my four fantastic years of college behind me, it would seem unnatural not to be a bit nostalgic about all of the incredible moments that Northern Arizona University has brought me. It’s where I finished off my teen years and kicked off my twenties. It’s where I made my dream of becoming a D1 collegiate athlete come true.

On Sunday evening, I learned that I would be graduating Summa Cum Laude. This is the highest Latin Honor indicating that my GPA is in the top 5% of the graduating business students. This honor was a little source of motivation going into finals week, because it validated that my hard work is being recognized. Like I’ve said, I’m not here to be “average.” To be recognized with this honor on my diploma and a cord to wear during the graduation ceremony is really special.

There have been many moments in the past six months that most seniors go through which are more stress-inducing than we’ve encountered in our twenty-two years before. Taking the GRE, applying to grad schools, making major life decisions like where to live and finding a job, for example. Factor in scheduling surgeries, training for a marathon, dealing with living situation issues, and coming to the realization that some of your best friends will no longer live in the same state is overwhelming for sure. But today I remembered that there were 3.5 years of incredible moments before this that should not be overlooked as I repeat how “ready” I am to graduate and leave. Sometimes it takes an outside perspective, in my case from my parents and teachers, to remind us that what we are going through is not as scary/stressful/dramatic as it seems in the moment.

So I started having my mandatory moment of nostalgia to appreciate the people and places that helped shape my college career. As I began writing this, the words and pictures and links just poured out. So to spare you from glazed-over eyes and a numb thumb from scrolling, I’ve broken the content up into a few posts to sprinkle throughout these final days. Let’s begin with freshman year, shall we?

2011: Freshman Year

I did not have a blog. Throughout the summer, as I followed the cross country training plan my new collegiate coach emailed me, I coordinated with my future roommate about dorm room decor. We had a black-white-and-red theme, and actually a more spacious room than I was expecting.

Looking back, I am proud that I completely immersed myself in the college experience. I lived in a dorm, ate in the dining halls, studied in the library, worked out in the campus rec center, became great friends with my teammates and other student athletes, attended the free Friday night movies in the on-campus theater, went rock climbing, volunteered at campus functions, and trained as a college athlete.

Freshman Pep Rally Stronglikemycoffee.comI painted my face and ran across the football field in the annual “Running of the Freshman” event at the first football game. We watched the homecoming parade downtown, toured the Halloween haunted house, built a snowman in my first time seeing snow, and rode a mechanical bull at the winter carnival. My cross country teammates also filled our weekends with team dinners, potlucks, a sketchy party, and a formal banquet. I even hosted some of the high school senior recruits. I took Zumba classes with friends from math class, and I became a Supplemental Instructor for my accounting professor during my second semester. This all meant I spent very little time in my dorm room, which is why I feel so happy about my first year of college.

I red-shirted my first cross country season, but I raced indoor track in the winter. My first-ever indoor 3,000 meter (just under 2 miles) race qualified me for the Big Sky Conference Championships where I raced the 5,000 meters. During outdoor track, I was so happy to be able to travel and race in Arizona, Utah, California, and again at Conference Championships in Bozeman, Montana. The traveling is one of the greatest perks of being a student-athlete, in my opinion.

Funny freshman year story: Cross Country boys are typically a quirky and entertaining bunch, and my teammates were no exception. During the last week of school, the boys’ team had planned a late-night boys-only “secret naked run.” (Why? I have no idea.) Their only downfall was that half of the boys’ team was dating half of the girls’ team. Inevitably, the girls’ team found out the details of their “secret” run. We planned a stealthy water balloon attack to add a little surprise to their run.

We dressed in black and sat in the dark and waited, unsure of what we were about to witness. Plot twist: the boys knew that we knew….and they had eggs. It turned into water balloon vs. eggs tag in forest. I ended the night with some yolk in my hair and memories that will last far longer than whatever I was supposed to be studying for finals.

Freshman Year Stake Out Stronglikemycoffee.comFreshman year was a blur of making the most of my time, and trying to figure out how to live “on my own.” For someone who had never shared a room before, I’d say I definitely don’t miss community bathrooms and showering in flip flops. (I always felt like I was camping!)

And I suppose this is the perfect stop to pause. Stay tuned for Sophomore Year!

Using the Weekend to Set Your Week Up for Success

Last night I was thinking about how much I dreaded Sunday nights when I was younger. I always have the most difficulty falling asleep on Sunday nights, just want to hold on to the weekend as long as possible I guess. Do you remember when they had the special Sunday Night Family Movie on ABC. It started at like 7 o’ clock, and I remember checking the TV Guide the old fashioned way…in the newspaper.

Now I usually use my Sunday nights to be productive with little tasks that will help take away some of the chores during the week. Today, I did three loads of laundry, dusted and tidied my bedroom and bathroom, and got some fruit washed and ready for the week. Little things can really make a difference in helping your week go smoothly so here are some ways that we can help set up our week for success. This is another one of those posts where the blog transitions from its “health and fitness” theme to “all things domestic” theme.

  • Check the weather: It’s just nice to know what to expect.
  • Plan out your work/school outfits accordingly: I pick out five complete outfits and hang them at the front of my closet. If they need ironing, do it all at once during the weekend!
  • Produce Prepping: Some people do complete meal prepping, but I’d rather eat food that is freshly prepared each day. However washing and chopping fruits and veggies, as well as portioning and packaging fruits for snacks cuts down on cooking and lunch-packing during the week. I like to bag up apple slices, grapes, berries, and bell pepper slices.
  • Sweat: I always say that it’s easier to exercise on the weekends than weekdays. I don’t waste my “rest day” on a Saturday or Sunday, because these days generally have more flexibility. Find some time to get in a workout, that way if you have to skip a workout during the week it’s not detrimental. Today, my workout was actually my “break time” from a term paper I’ve been working on. I was stalling going back home and my legs felt pretty good so I ended up running 11.11 miles (because I like ending on “good” numbers haha).
  • Laundry & Linens: Working out every day really fills up the laundry hamper fast. Trying to squeeze in laundry during the week can be difficult (especially when you have roommates who always seem to use the washer/dryer on the same day) so use the time you’ll be at home during the weekend to get it all done. Sheets and towels should be washed once a week too, might as well give yourself some fresh fluffy sheets to crawl into on the dreaded Sunday night.
  • Stock Up: During the week, I use the “notes” page on my iPhone to write down little things that are running out. That way, I can make one trip to Target to get them all at once. Currently, I have hand soap, dryer sheets, Listerine tabs, paper towels, makeup remover, and coffee on my list. But that’s because coffee is on all of my lists ;)
  • Plan your Workout Schedule: “Failure to plan is planning to fail” is forever locked in my brain thanks to my high school cross country coach. We are more likely to hit the gym or tackle that workout if it is pre-planned, including place and time.
  • Clear the Clutter: Take it from me. When you are in the middle of a busy and stressful week, a sink full of dishes and a counter full of clutter can just be the straw that breaks the camel’s back. If on Sunday night, your sink is empty, the clutter is cleaned up and the floors are cleaned, it will make a difference in helping your week go more smoothly.
  • Unwind: Relax and enjoy the last few moments of your weekend so that you can go into Monday with a fresh face and positive attitude. Last night, I had a low-key evening in my apartment so I lit a candle, brewed decaf coffee, played Lady Antebellum, and gave myself a facial.

Using Sunday Night to Set Your Week up for Success *New Blog Post* | Stronglikemycoffee.comThat’s my list so far. And spoiler alert, I also spent my Sunday night typing up this blog post. Which helped take away from the list of things to do on Monday morning. So you see, I practice what I preach ;)

What other weekend/Sunday Night “chores” do you do?

What Would You Do…?

Good afternoon! :) How has your week been? Mine is dragging a little, but I have so many fun things on my agenda for the next few days that I think it will turn around! Tomorrow night, The Band Perry is coming to my school (!!!) and my friends and I are excited for one last college concert together.

3 best friends in fall (stronglikemycoffee.com)Speaking of “lasts”……there are only 15 days left of college so I have a feeling everything is going to be a “last” pretty soon.

Last college weekend.

Last night downtown.

Last study session in the library.

Last spontaneous froyo trip (which will likely be followed by “okay now THIS is the last time for real”)

Last drive out to Lake Mary.

Last college sports game as a student (the Spring Football game this weekend, yay!)

Last paper/presentation/lecture/exam/homework/quiz EVER.

Last (hopefully) time I have to coordinate a group project assignment at the midnight hour.

Last opportunity to blame being a “broke college student” for my mismatched dish collection or cheerios-for-dinner nights (which actually has nothing to do with being broke, I just like Cheerios.)

Last time ever living with roommates (my next roommate will be my future husband I hope! haha)

Laaaaaaaaast chance to change my major? Just kidding ;)

SO this brings me to my very important question for you. Right now I am in such a unique situation that leaves such so much opportunity open to take advantage of. I am leaving this town for good. I am moving to another state. I will likely not see 99.73% of my peers from here again. It feels like I just have to do something wild/silly/ridiculous/spontaneous (the fact that I’m asking for help negates the spontaneity here, I understand)/embarrassing/memorable*.

*Fine print: NO tattoos, illegal activities, or permanent alterations to the body please. ;)

So what would you do!? Tell that boy how you’ve been crushing on him for a solid two months? Carve your initials somewhere? Finally stand up to that loud-mouth diva and say what everyone’s been thinking? Wear the outfit you’ve had in your closet for two years but always been too self-conscious to wear?

Hiking Mt. Humphreys // group at summit (stronglikemycoffee.com)I was talking about this with a friend and we struggled to come up with two ideas. One is semi-legitimate and the other is just sad. First, I would sing karaoke downtown. I know this isn’t super embarrassing, but you’ve not heard me sing. Right before I leave town would probably be the most appropriate time for this particular night out ;) And the second is wear ponytails/messy buns in public. Yep, I blow dry, straighten, or curl my hair every single day that I leave my apartment or see people other than my roommates or family. My poor, poor split ends. I just don’t feel comfortable wearing up-do’s (unless I’m working out) so when I have just 15 days left, I am more likely to care less about my appearance. (Not so much less that I’ll consider wearing leggings as pants or slippers to class though…..don’t be ridiculous ;) ) Processed with VSCOcam with g3 preset

CLEARLY I need some guidance in the “final days of college” department. I mean I already have some pretty spectacular college memories but now it’s time to go out with a BANG :)
