Using the Weekend to Set Your Week Up for Success

Last night I was thinking about how much I dreaded Sunday nights when I was younger. I always have the most difficulty falling asleep on Sunday nights, just want to hold on to the weekend as long as possible I guess. Do you remember when they had the special Sunday Night Family Movie on ABC. It started at like 7 o’ clock, and I remember checking the TV Guide the old fashioned way…in the newspaper.

Now I usually use my Sunday nights to be productive with little tasks that will help take away some of the chores during the week. Today, I did three loads of laundry, dusted and tidied my bedroom and bathroom, and got some fruit washed and ready for the week. Little things can really make a difference in helping your week go smoothly so here are some ways that we can help set up our week for success. This is another one of those posts where the blog transitions from its “health and fitness” theme to “all things domestic” theme.

  • Check the weather: It’s just nice to know what to expect.
  • Plan out your work/school outfits accordingly: I pick out five complete outfits and hang them at the front of my closet. If they need ironing, do it all at once during the weekend!
  • Produce Prepping: Some people do complete meal prepping, but I’d rather eat food that is freshly prepared each day. However washing and chopping fruits and veggies, as well as portioning and packaging fruits for snacks cuts down on cooking and lunch-packing during the week. I like to bag up apple slices, grapes, berries, and bell pepper slices.
  • Sweat: I always say that it’s easier to exercise on the weekends than weekdays. I don’t waste my “rest day” on a Saturday or Sunday, because these days generally have more flexibility. Find some time to get in a workout, that way if you have to skip a workout during the week it’s not detrimental. Today, my workout was actually my “break time” from a term paper I’ve been working on. I was stalling going back home and my legs felt pretty good so I ended up running 11.11 miles (because I like ending on “good” numbers haha).
  • Laundry & Linens: Working out every day really fills up the laundry hamper fast. Trying to squeeze in laundry during the week can be difficult (especially when you have roommates who always seem to use the washer/dryer on the same day) so use the time you’ll be at home during the weekend to get it all done. Sheets and towels should be washed once a week too, might as well give yourself some fresh fluffy sheets to crawl into on the dreaded Sunday night.
  • Stock Up: During the week, I use the “notes” page on my iPhone to write down little things that are running out. That way, I can make one trip to Target to get them all at once. Currently, I have hand soap, dryer sheets, Listerine tabs, paper towels, makeup remover, and coffee on my list. But that’s because coffee is on all of my lists ;)
  • Plan your Workout Schedule: “Failure to plan is planning to fail” is forever locked in my brain thanks to my high school cross country coach. We are more likely to hit the gym or tackle that workout if it is pre-planned, including place and time.
  • Clear the Clutter: Take it from me. When you are in the middle of a busy and stressful week, a sink full of dishes and a counter full of clutter can just be the straw that breaks the camel’s back. If on Sunday night, your sink is empty, the clutter is cleaned up and the floors are cleaned, it will make a difference in helping your week go more smoothly.
  • Unwind: Relax and enjoy the last few moments of your weekend so that you can go into Monday with a fresh face and positive attitude. Last night, I had a low-key evening in my apartment so I lit a candle, brewed decaf coffee, played Lady Antebellum, and gave myself a facial.

Using Sunday Night to Set Your Week up for Success *New Blog Post* | Stronglikemycoffee.comThat’s my list so far. And spoiler alert, I also spent my Sunday night typing up this blog post. Which helped take away from the list of things to do on Monday morning. So you see, I practice what I preach ;)

What other weekend/Sunday Night “chores” do you do?

What Would You Do…?

Good afternoon! :) How has your week been? Mine is dragging a little, but I have so many fun things on my agenda for the next few days that I think it will turn around! Tomorrow night, The Band Perry is coming to my school (!!!) and my friends and I are excited for one last college concert together.

3 best friends in fall (stronglikemycoffee.com)Speaking of “lasts”……there are only 15 days left of college so I have a feeling everything is going to be a “last” pretty soon.

Last college weekend.

Last night downtown.

Last study session in the library.

Last spontaneous froyo trip (which will likely be followed by “okay now THIS is the last time for real”)

Last drive out to Lake Mary.

Last college sports game as a student (the Spring Football game this weekend, yay!)

Last paper/presentation/lecture/exam/homework/quiz EVER.

Last (hopefully) time I have to coordinate a group project assignment at the midnight hour.

Last opportunity to blame being a “broke college student” for my mismatched dish collection or cheerios-for-dinner nights (which actually has nothing to do with being broke, I just like Cheerios.)

Last time ever living with roommates (my next roommate will be my future husband I hope! haha)

Laaaaaaaaast chance to change my major? Just kidding ;)

SO this brings me to my very important question for you. Right now I am in such a unique situation that leaves such so much opportunity open to take advantage of. I am leaving this town for good. I am moving to another state. I will likely not see 99.73% of my peers from here again. It feels like I just have to do something wild/silly/ridiculous/spontaneous (the fact that I’m asking for help negates the spontaneity here, I understand)/embarrassing/memorable*.

*Fine print: NO tattoos, illegal activities, or permanent alterations to the body please. ;)

So what would you do!? Tell that boy how you’ve been crushing on him for a solid two months? Carve your initials somewhere? Finally stand up to that loud-mouth diva and say what everyone’s been thinking? Wear the outfit you’ve had in your closet for two years but always been too self-conscious to wear?

Hiking Mt. Humphreys // group at summit (stronglikemycoffee.com)I was talking about this with a friend and we struggled to come up with two ideas. One is semi-legitimate and the other is just sad. First, I would sing karaoke downtown. I know this isn’t super embarrassing, but you’ve not heard me sing. Right before I leave town would probably be the most appropriate time for this particular night out ;) And the second is wear ponytails/messy buns in public. Yep, I blow dry, straighten, or curl my hair every single day that I leave my apartment or see people other than my roommates or family. My poor, poor split ends. I just don’t feel comfortable wearing up-do’s (unless I’m working out) so when I have just 15 days left, I am more likely to care less about my appearance. (Not so much less that I’ll consider wearing leggings as pants or slippers to class though…..don’t be ridiculous ;) ) Processed with VSCOcam with g3 preset

CLEARLY I need some guidance in the “final days of college” department. I mean I already have some pretty spectacular college memories but now it’s time to go out with a BANG :)

XOXO Kenz

The Summer Reading List

The Strong Like My Coffee Summer Reading List Stronglikemycoffee.comReading lists are not mandatory anymore, they’re very much elective. When I was little, I was completely consumed with the novels I read for fun. Some stand-outs in my mind include Bridge to Terabithia, Ella Enchanted, The Giver, and Starring Sally J. Freedman as Herself. They were more addicting than reality TV.

I have this paranoia about staring at electronic screens for too long. We are the first generation to grow up with so much screen-time, constant phone interaction plus work and homework on the computer. It can’t be good right? I keep thinking that twenty years down the line, it will have some negative side effect. Like our eye color will fade or our skin tone will change. Call me weird but whatever, limiting screen time can’t be a bad thing!

My post-it note with books to read this summer has been growing growing growing over the last few months. Some of these are books that were recommended in magazines, some had good reviews on blogs I follow and some were referenced by my professors. Since I buy books by the dozens when I go home, I’m definitely not opposed to buying used books. I think a major Amazon purchase is in my future!

The Strong Like My Coffee Summer Reading List is Here! Stronglikemycoffee.com | Healthy College Girl Blog

  • The Bell Jar by Sylvia Plath: This book appears on my reading list because of its relevance to a 22-year old college graduate without a concrete life plan mapped out yet. It’s timeless! (Or so I’ve heard.)
  • It Was Me All Along by Andie Mitchell: All of my favorite bloggers have been reading and talking about this memoir, a story of a food blogger and her self-acceptance over body image issues.
  • How to Be a Hepburn in a Hilton World by Jordan Christy: Another book I spotted on a blog book review. Apparently this book includes “assignments”, and as someone who would rather be domestic than dramatic, I am intrigued!
  • Love and Miss Communication by Elyssa Friedland: Oh if this isn’t appropriate to the introduction paragraph above. A book that encourages us to look up from our mobile devices and have human interaction! One of the greatest disappointments of college was being surrounded by millennials who would rather text than talk. (So the people that need to read books like these won’t, and the people that want others to read it will. Sigh.)
  • How to Start a Fire by Lisa Lutz: A story about three college BFFs and their lives twenty years post-grad. Cosmo-magazine recommended.
  • Blue Ocean Strategy by W. Chan Kim & Renee Mauborgne: This book has its own trailer…..a best-seller on five continents about competition and strategy, it must have something I can learn from!
  • The Human Brand by Chris Malone & Susan T. Fiske: A man I sat next to on one of my many flights to New York was reading this book. I told him I was a senior marketing student and he highly recommended it. Word of mouth is the best advertising, so I added it to the list!
  • Worth the Wait by Jamie Beck: because sometimes you just need a juicy rom-com summer read too.

Any others that you recommend? I love all varieties…biographies, mysteries, romance, thrillers, educational, historical, classics and currents!
