Marathon Race Crew

Yesterday morning, I volunteered, along with a fun bunch of my fellow track athletes, at our town’s annual marathon. Community service is a requirement for our school’s athletic department, and a marathon seemed like a pretty sweet gig for a distance runner like me to volunteer at! I was stationed at the finish line handing out medals, water bottles and gatorades to the runners.

Hardware!

Watching people young and old come through the finish line after completing 26.2 miles only made me more excited for when I can train for marathons. We stood at the finish line until the very last runner came through, enjoying the beautiful views. No cell service here!

Some of the marathon sponsors had booths set up with free samples. I was SUPER excited to try a new muscle milk: Light Vanilla Latte.

The vendor said it had a hint of chai! I saved it for lunch but was incredibly disappointed that I couldn’t finish one sip – GROSS. :( Just a water bottle for meee please!

I don’t know if us volunteers worked up an appetite from all our cheering or we were just bored. Luckily there was plenty of race fuel sitting around……

All around a good experience but, sounding like a broken record, I would rather be IN THE RACE than on the sidelines. Got to see some very cool and inspiring people  cross the finish line. One older man carried his wife across the finish line. A few people got off-course and ended up running 28 miles. There were some pretty wild and fantastic outfits too! Any day that I get to spend in the forest surrounded by people running and challenging themselves is a good day :)

Dorm Sweet Dorm

It’s been almost a month since I moved back to school, but only a week with my new roommate, Fernanda. She moved in last weekend after we met at the start of this semester, and we seemed like more compatible roommates. We both share a love for organization and tidiness but our room was a little plain with the big blank white walls.  I wanted some fun and some color:

First, I had 8 of my favorite photographs printed in black and white – 4 vertical and 4 horizontal. I posted them above my bed. Since my room colors are black, white, red and gray, these circular designs for wall art were a perfect find!

Then on Wednesday, I was feeling suddenly inspired. I wanted some “art” for the walls, and I’ve always wanted to try painting. I’ve never actually painted a picture since finger painting in elementary school, but I bought myself some 8×10 canvases, 10 different color paints and 4 different paint brushes.

Since I only have one class on Fridays, I spent the afternoon making two original paintings to hang above my bed. I am totally an amateur and have no painting experience, so of course they are a little cartoon-y and silly but now I have two things I LOVE decorating my walls…Coffee and Elephants :D

Ellie <3

I came up with what I wanted in my head, penciled the outline of the elephant and just had fun with the rest. The coffee I completely free-handed because that one was a little bit easier. It was a fun project to work on and now my room is a little less plain. Starting to feel a little more like home <3

Dad turns the BIG 5-0!

Today is a special post because today, my daddy turns 50! HALF A CENTURY! :P I wish I could be at home to celebrate with him but I couldn’t get out of an exam so I am sending my love via cyberspace. This song came on my iPod while I was working out yesterday and I thought it was so appropriate for his birthday:

It’s true! We have so many fun things planned in the future, beginning with a challenge I gave him in honor of his 50th birthday: a half century ride (a 50 mile bike ride). I want to do this with him, so we’ll have to wait until I get home but it will be so fun to complete a challenging long bike ride together. 50 and fitter than ever!

Get this: he woke up at 4:30am on his BIRTHDAY to go to the gym and workout before work. Now THAT is dedication. Props, old man!

Always and Forever a Daddy’s Girl!

Happy Birthday Daddy and here’s to 50 more! :)
