Bucket List Item #26: Practice Calligraphy

One of my best friends Chelsea has always had beautiful penmanship and practiced calligraphy years ago. She’d send mail with the fanciest addresses on them and it was a skill I admired.

When we were doing some of the DIY decor for our wedding in the summer of 2021, Chelsea drove up from Salt Lake City to hang out for the weekend. While she was here, I asked if she would write on name on all of our party favors. I tried to recreate her pretty letters myself but they just looked so amateur in comparison. Calligraphy is definitely a skill that takes some practice!

Last year, Zeb bought me some Calligraphy workbooks and pens so that I could have some guided practice. Since I had these new fun and beautiful resources, I wanted to make sure they had a place on my bucket list so that I made sure to use them!

Switching gears – though I promise I will relate these two topics soon – last September, I joined a “mom group” called MOPs. It’s an international organization with chapters all over, and my local Boise chapter has 100 women with a waiting list for more. MOPs stands for Moms of Preschoolers, though you can join as soon as you are expecting and stay until your last child turns 5 years old. I joined because my good friend Hayley speaks really highly of it and has met almost all of her friends through the program. As someone who is always looking for other girls to connect with, I was happy to see what it had to offer and meet other local moms around my age. :)

Many of the moms in my chapter have several kids and have been in the program for years. They provide an incredible brunch spread of homemade dishes on our biweekly Friday meetings, from quiches to crockpot oatmeals, banana breads, fruit salads, and even mini avocado toasts. You are assigned a “table” that you sit with for the entire year; so even though there are 99 other women, you always sit with the same 9. That way you can get to know each other and continue to build relationships and trust and conversation.

Since it’s all been my first time experiencing this program, I did not even think to bring a little Christmas gift for my table when our December meeting came around. I felt super lame arriving empty-handed when I saw my fellow table-mates bring cute little baked goods, homemade crafts and other sweet little gifts. I made a mental note to bring something for everyone on the next holiday – Valentine’s Day!

Here’s where my two topics combine :) I used my “Practice Calligraphy” task to write out little Valentine tags for every mom at my table to attach with their little Valentine’s Day gift.

I found these really cute earring sets online and got a pack of girlie stickers. I cut out some tags, one for each friend. I tried out different calligraphy fonts from my workbook for their names. I did have to throw away a handful of tags because the letters looked too funky or they just didn’t end up in a straight line. I have a newfound respect for calligraphers because it’s not as easy as it looks!

When I had a tag for everyone that I felt looked decent enough, I used a hole punch and then threaded a ribbon through the tag as well as the earring cardboard. I added a valentine sticker to the back and curled the ribbon tails. Voila! A cute little table gift and a perfect excuse to try my hand (haha pun intended) at calligraphy ;) It was a fun little activity while my daughter was taking her afternoon nap, and I’ll need to make sure I breakout the pen set for all my future gifts, cards, and tags!

I’m really impressed with how well-organized the MOPs program is. The schedule and email communications are always timely, professional, but personable. There is FREE childcare for babies through 5-year-olds. Each table takes turns providing a giant brunch and coffee spread for the group. There are scheduled Mom’s Nights Out and Play Dates every month. There is a “giving table” to bring in any children’s clothing and toys you want to donate; fellow attendees have first dibs to take anything they want from the giving table, and everything else is taken to a donation facility. MOPs headquarters also has a really well put-together magazine that is automatically sent to members, as well as a podcast with all kinds of topics from budgeting, marriage, decluttering, and discipline. It is a Christian-based organization and I’m very open about the fact that I am not a religious person and I do not attend church; I respect people’s faith and beliefs but I am primarily involved with this group for connection to other women in my community that are also wives and moms to young babes.

My calligraphy is not professional looking, but I got in a little practice and I’ll keep working at it.

Time to get to bed because I have a BIG day tomorrow that I will share with you!

Bucket List Item #25: 30 Regular Push-ups in a Row

I’m happy to report that Dragon is alive and well in his new home still :) Apparently betta fish are notoriously temperamental with transitioning into habitats, and they either live 90 minutes or 5 years….. We surpassed the former!

Today’s bucket list accomplishment was one of the tasks that really doesn’t offer much of a story with it. Rather, it truly was a task that I simply checked off with some physical effort in a couple minutes and carried on with my day. (What took me 11 months then..? Don’t ask.)

So, I will happily use the blog post then to continue to share some other highlights from life recently. Like good ole’ journal entry posts from back in the day.

I knew that I needed a witness to my 30 push-ups so that no one could accuse me of having poor form or cheating. So I went over to my parents’ house and set myself up in their garage gym. My mom came out to watch, count, snap a couple photos, and confirm that I did in fact get full credit for this task.

The first 15 were easy and I knocked them out, boom, boom boom. The next 15 were much harder and I had to pause for a couple of seconds throughout. By the last two, my arms were shaking and BARELY built up enough power to push me back up to a plank position. But I did it! My mom is my witness haha.

Like I said, there’s not much of a story beyond that! So what else is going on over here?

My book club just met up last week, this time Liz hosted. Every month, we trade off hosting at our houses. If you are the host, then you get to pick the book that month. Liz picked “Daisy Darker” which I downloaded on Audible because I’m still finishing my physical copy of A Court of Thorns and Roses. I always have one physical book and one audio book that I’m working through at a time. I’m really proud of the fact that my book club has been going for over four years now. We’ve had some members come and go, but it’s always a really good girls night full of conversation!

Recently I started to think about what content I will continue to blog about after my 30 List is complete in the next couple of weeks. This list was a catalyst to launching back into posting after a hiatus and I’m glad that it really motivated me to not only schedule in memorable events, but also provide the outlet to journal them here for myself and others. Moving on to next year, I don’t think I need a list to hold myself accountable to again. I’ve had a year to find a groove of sharing organic content again – like Idaho events, long weekends, vacations, baby updates, life updates, and random occurrences that I want to preserve.

I’ve also really wanted to share more about the lifestyle of a family with a commercial pilot husband because the schedule alone can be very challenging and strange. My favorite blogs to read and YouTube videos to watch aren’t necessarily someone giving me tips and solutions, but other relatable girls showing their everyday life that I can just tune into and enjoy. (I love when they include funny things their kids say and do, or any content of people on a luxurious vacation or trip) Sometimes it’s like an escape, or just a fun little glimpse into how differently other people live. Is it just me, or by this far into winter is anyone else getting a little sick of the inside of their home?

All that to stay, while I’m in the final sprint of this bucket list blog endeavor, I have plenty on the horizon for when it’s over. I’ve got 5 more tasks to finish in 8 days soo……I’ll likely be seeing you here again tomorrow 😁

Bucket List Item #24: Catch a Fish

We took our fishing poles and tackle box out to various Idaho rivers and ponds all throughout 2022. I think the first time I tried fishing for this bucket list item was in May during our Father’s Day camping trip. We took Zeb’s boat out on Lake Cascade and spent a while casting and reeling with absolutely nothing to show for it.

Another weekend, we took the opportunity to bring Brynnley in her stroller with us along the Boise River. The spot was also fruitless, and we made a second stop at a local park’s pond. Again, we left empty-handed.

I know they call it “fishing” and not “catching” because you don’t always hook a fish, and that’s why it’s meant to just be an enjoyable pasttime outside. Which it is. But it’s frustrating to devote so much time to an activity that I’m trying to complete for the list and have no guarantee of when it will finally be accomplished!

I am so happy to report that this afternoon, I caught a little fish and brought him home.

Meet Dragon!

A veiltail betta fish, this little guy is our very first family pet ☺️

We have steered away from committing to any pets because we already feel limited on time and flexibility with Zeb’s work schedule and a baby. If I weren’t allergic though, I would absolutely have a cat. I do really like cats (especially their low maintenance…) but too long around one and my arms break out in itchy hives, my eyes start watering and I sneeze like crazy. Boo.

When capturing a fish in the Idaho waters proved more elusive than I imagined, I got creative with the interpretation of this bucket list item.

This guy’s bright blue tail was so pretty to me, and he also made direct eye contact when I was picking out my fish. He was very active and swam around the most. I’m not sure what other criteria makes a great pet fish, so I decided that was enough to make him my #1 pick.

I did a little bit of research and watched a couple YouTube videos before I went to the store with Brynnley to pick up all our supplies. I got a little tank that has a reservoir and makes cycling in new water really easy. He’s also got a little heater suctioned to the side, which is what that black power cord is for. I mixed in two types of rock, added a decorative Asian temple for cover and a little greenery. I also got fish food, tap water treatment drops, and a vacation feeder in case we go on another long weekend soon.

So far the little guy seems impressed with his new digs. When Brynnley and I come up to his tank to watch him swim, he comes and stares right back at us.

I would like to figure out how to get less bubbles along the glass, so if you have any tips, please let me know! :)
